German Numbers Aren't Backwards — English Is the One That Changed
There is a specific moment in every German course where somebody puts their pen down. It is usually the number einundzwanzig — literally one-and-twenty — and the complaint is always the same: why would anyone say the small part first? It feels like the language is deliberately making arithmetic harder. The answer is genuinely surprising: German isn't doing anything unusual. English is the language that changed.
Units-first is the original order
Putting the unit before the ten is the inherited Germanic pattern, and English used it too. Old English said ān and twentiġ — one and twenty. It stayed in the language for centuries, and it never entirely left: it is fossilised in the nursery rhyme most English speakers can still recite.
And German is not alone today. Dutch says eenentwintig. Danish says enogtyve. Arabic does the same thing. Once you see the list, the question flips around: it isn't why does German do this, it's why did English stop.
One country actually voted to change it
Norwegian used to count exactly like German — en og tyve for 21. In 1951 Norway officially adopted the tens-first system, tjueén, making it one of the very few documented cases of a country deliberately legislating how its people count.
The motivation was partly educational — the old order was reported as a persistent problem in schools — and partly a wish to line up with Swedish and English. But the thing that actually forced the decision was gloriously mundane: Oslo's telephone numbers went from five digits to six in 1946, and reading them aloud in units-first order was causing errors.
It didn't work
Seventy-odd years later, Norwegians who say tjueén in every other context will still read 21 in a phone number as enogtjue. The old order survived precisely where the reform was aimed. A state can change the official rule; it cannot easily change what a language does automatically.
That is worth sitting with if you are learning German. The order isn't a quirk somebody invented to inconvenience you. It is old, it is widespread, and it is sticky enough to survive an act of government.
Why this actually costs you marks
This isn't only a curiosity. Researchers studying transcoding — hearing a number and writing the digits — have found that German's inverted number words measurably slow the process and increase errors compared with languages that say the tens first. You hear ein… and your hand wants to write 1.
That is exactly the trap in A1 and A2 Hören. Prices, room numbers, dates and phone numbers are standard listening-test content, and the inversion is what makes them catch people. The practical fix is simple but it has to become a habit:
- Wait for the whole word. Do not start writing at ein… — the ten hasn't arrived yet.
- Write the second part first. When you hear einundzwanzig, put down the 2, then the 1. The word gives you the digits in reverse order, so reverse them back.
- Practise the ones that sound alike. siebzehn (17) and siebzig (70), dreizehn (13) and dreißig (30). These, not the inversion, are where most listening marks are actually lost.
